Out with the Old and in with the New

I was quite surprised to read the Guardian’s article “Old technology: NHS uses 10% of world’s pagers at annual cost of £6.6m” as I haven’t seen anyone using a pager for many years. In fact the pager was invented in 1949 so is extremely old technology. This in turn made me think of the ‘old’ technology in the planning and finance industry i.e Excel. Both technologies are still around despite new technologies being developed that remedy the weakness they inherently have. Sometimes it is all too easy just to keep in your ‘comfort zone’ and stay with what you have when change could bring better functionality, efficiency and ultimately more profitability to your business. You just need to take that initial leap.
